Social enterprises are still seen as companies that are funded by grants, donations and what more. This used to be so, but nowadays it is a misconception according to one of the most comprehensive researches done in this field.

Currently, the sales of services and products are the primary source of income for social enterprises.

The following quote says it all:

That the social enterprises in our survey are firmly anchored in the market is not at odds with their social mission. Across countries, social enterprises seek to align their social impact and revenue-generating activities in their day-to-day operations. They also report that the purpose of their organization is clearly and predominantly social.

In another article I have pointed out to the zero-sum game. I believe social enterprises decrease the negative gap between gain and loss in relati on to short- and long-term, societal and ecological.

I come across so many great ideas and companies, the list is endless. I want to give a local example directly from my neighbourhood.  There is a small restaurant that works with the supermarket close to it and uses food that is almost overdue and would have been destroyed. With these foods, the two cooks create very nice dishes that change every day depending on the food that is available.

This is a great mission to combat food waste and destruction and it is much healthier than fast-food as the pricing is in the same segment of the latter.

What great local social enterprise examples can you mention?
